[D] Bought a used Lambda workstation, looking for advice.
Specs are:
CPU i9-10920X 3.5GHz 12 core socket LGA2066
44GB VRAM across four 2080Ti GPUs (blower style)
256 GB of DDR4-2933
ASUS WS X299 SAGE Mother Board
Running Ubuntu (don’t remember the version)
The cooler was bent by someone, so I removed it to check thermal paste and adjust it back to original shape, does not appear to be damaged and thermal paste was recently reapplied. My guess is they dropped the cooler and didn’t fix it before reinstallation, regardless, it got me thinking about upgrades. So far I have found that there is an 18 core 3.0GHz version of the same socket i9, it has a bit more cache memory and 48 lanes instead of the 44 that the current CPU has. I am not sure if this is worth upgrading or not?
The GPUs (I know you can solder new chips for double the memory), they have the NVLink and the MoBo has the capability to take advantage of it, wasn’t sure if it would be a benefit or a gimmick?
Also thought about going to an AIO water cooler for the CPU, but the space inside the case is a little “confused” and I am not really sure how it would work out. Noctua has a dual fan heatsink that could be used.
